Winter Grass as the Top Choice

Everyone just loves a lawn with a dazzling green grass! But arriving at a decision on what variety to choose is really a tough one. The most important thing to consider is the climate in your location. For instance, those who live in the Northern part of the United States and other cold winter areas require specific types of winter grass.

One such variety is called winter rye grass, otherwise known as Lolium Perenne. If you are planning for a landscape which suggests planting winter grass, then you should know that winter rye grass is often combined with fescues and bluegrass to enhance sturdiness. Bluegrasses are known to be capable of handling massive foot traffic.

Because of its fine texture, lush green color and ability to germinate in almost all soil conditions, winter grass is usually seen in the South for more of a decorative purpose rather than a necessity. In addition, winter rye grass grows rapidly even with little soil preparation.

Planting winter grass is also an effective way of placing an embankment around your house. If not mixed with bluegrass, they can be considered as a replacement. The only downside of this idea is winter rye grass does not spread out as much as bluegrass can. They normally grow in clusters. During springtime, they tend to grow thicker and greener provided there is enough sunlight received.

In this article, we are referring to winter rye and not the annual rye grass. Though the latter is much cheaper, it cannot endure extreme temperatures. But since the southern part of United States has lighter cold weather than the North, they can use the annual rye instead.
